What to Tell Us, and What We Will Tell You

Irrigation is a diagnostic trade, and the more you can describe before anyone drives out, the better the first visit goes. You do not need to know what is broken — that is our job — but a few details narrow it down considerably.

Useful things to mention

  • What you are actually seeing. A dead patch in the lawn, a shrub dying while its neighbours are fine, standing water, a zone that will not come on, a zone that will not go off, a bill that jumped.
  • Whether it is one spot or the whole zone. One head behaving badly and an entire zone behaving badly are different problems with different causes, and this single detail tells us a great deal.
  • What changed recently. New landscaping, a patio or fence going in, a gravel top-dressing, a new controller, someone else working on the yard. Irrigation faults very often date from the last time something was dug.
  • Whether it is turf or planting beds. Turf runs on sprinkler heads and beds usually run on drip. They fail in unrelated ways.
  • How old the system is, if you know. A five-year-old builder system and a forty-year-old system that has been patched by six people are very different starting points.

Photos and video help more than descriptions

If you can text a photo of the problem area, the valve box, or the controller — or better, a few seconds of video with the zone running — that is often worth more than ten minutes on the phone. A video of a zone actually running shows arc, throw, pressure and spray pattern all at once.

What you will hear back

We will tell you what the symptom most commonly means and roughly what is involved in putting it right. What we will not do is give you a firm price before anyone has run your zones. A number quoted from a phone description is a guess, and guesses in this trade are either too high, which is not fair to you, or too low, which turns into an awkward conversation in your back yard.

If it is an emergency

There is really only one irrigation emergency: water that will not stop. A zone stuck open or a broken mainline moves a genuinely large volume in a Phoenix summer, and it runs up a bill every hour it continues. If that is what is happening, shut the irrigation water off at its main shutoff valve first and call second. Everything else — dry patches, weak heads, dying shrubs, a controller that has lost its program — will keep until we can get to you.

Frequently Asked

Getting Hold of Us

The practical questions, answered.

Call or text (480) 555-0100. Texting works well if you can send a photo or a short video of what the zone is doing — it often tells us more than a description.
Where the problem is, what you have noticed, and whether anything has changed recently — new landscaping, a patio, a fence, a bill that jumped. If you know which zone it is, even better.
No. Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, closed Saturday and Sunday. If you have a zone stuck open outside those hours, shut the irrigation water off at the main and call us when we open.
Shut the water off to the irrigation system at its main shutoff valve, then call. A stuck-open valve in a Valley summer moves a large amount of water quickly, so it is the one fault worth acting on immediately.
